Il castello assunse notorietà fuori dell'ambito assisano per aver dato i natali a frate Elia, uno dei più illustri "figli" di S. Francesco, suo discepolo e vicario; il suo nome è legato alla costruzione della basilica di Assisi, di cui fu l'ideatore e forse l'architetto. La sua nascita al castello era documentata da una scritta su un affresco, ormai scomparso, sulla porta del refettorio del Sacro Convento, ritraente S.
